The return of an icon: Roche Bobois reissues the Ovalia armchair

More than half a century after its debut, the Ovalia armchair by Danish designer Henrik Thor-Larsen returns in a contemporary edition by Roche Bobois.

First unveiled at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair in 1968, Ovalia became an emblem of European futurist design. Its smooth fibreglass shell, organic curves and cocoon-like interior captured the experimental spirit of the Space Age while offering something deeply personal: a peaceful sanctuary separated from its surroundings.

Instantly recognisable by its sculptural, egg-shaped silhouette, Ovalia has retained a remarkable sense of modernity. The armchair is at once an enveloping retreat, an expressive design object and a striking focal point for contemporary interiors.

A design icon reimagined for 2026

The new Roche Bobois edition respects the visionary identity of Thor-Larsen’s original while adapting it for modern living.

The backrest inclination has been redesigned, while an elastic-strap seat and integrated headrest provide a softer, more supportive and enveloping seating experience. A discreet magnetic smartphone holder has also been incorporated into the shell, transforming Ovalia into a private space for reading, listening, watching or simply retreating from the world.

These considered updates enhance the chair’s comfort and functionality without compromising its distinctive sculptural form.

New colours and customisation possibilities

The fibreglass shell is available in six exclusive shades, offered in high-gloss or matte lacquer finishes. An extensive selection of premium upholstery fabrics provides further opportunities for personalisation, from sophisticated tonal combinations to bold contrasts of colour and texture.

The armchair can be paired with a coordinating footstool and circular cocktail table to create a complete composition. Each Ovalia also features an exclusive medal bearing Henrik Thor-Larsen’s name and the date of the new edition, marking its place in the continuing history of this celebrated design.

The reissue reflects Roche Bobois’ longstanding relationship with Scandinavian design and its commitment to bringing important creative ideas into the present. Ovalia’s original character is carefully preserved while contemporary standards of comfort, craftsmanship and customisation give it renewed relevance.

Bold yet functional, futuristic yet organic, Ovalia demonstrates why certain designs transcend the era in which they were created. Whether specified in vivid lacquer or a more restrained tonal palette, it brings character, colour and design history to residential, hospitality and commercial interiors.
