The project is a new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) intended to provide housing for a senior family member. Stylistically the design keys off of the Westville (New Haven) Colonial main house and abstracts certain elements to create a new expression that is contemporary yet also sympathetic to the context. This project is extremely energy efficient (including a solar array, high efficiency HVAC system, and superinsulation). Additionally it is the first Accessory Dwelling Unit approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals in New Haven to be constructed since a zoning ordinance change to conditionally permit ADUs in the city.
