A Rustic Modern Estate
Set in California wine country, Calistoga Estate I is a rustic modern estate that balances architectural clarity with a strong connection to its natural setting. The custom home is arranged around formal axial circulation. One axis connects the patio, to dining, to the living room and culminates at the primary suite, while a complementary cross-axis connects the main entry and rear terrace to the outdoor dining and cooking areas.
Views were central to the design process, shaping a California wine country residence that feels open, grounded and carefully composed. Airy corner windows adjacent to large picture windows and pocketing doors bring light deep into the home while framing the surrounding landscape. Stone and cedar move from exterior to interior, giving the architecture warmth, texture and continuity.
This rustic modern estate is defined by its balance of modern form and natural materiality. The integration of stone and cedar was established early in the design, creating a clear identity for the composition while blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Most notably, the custom home survived the Tubbs Fire of October 2017, when neighboring homes were lost adding a powerful layer of resilience to a project shaped by permanence, connection and material strength.
