Glen Ellen Estate is a rustic modern vineyard estate shaped by renewal, connection and a strong sense of place. Rebuilt after the original small home was destroyed in the Northern California wildfires of 2017, the wine country home was designed to feel welcoming from the moment of arrival, with a clear entry expressed as a tower clad in Corten steel.
The architecture unfolds as a quartet of volumes arranged around two courtyards, creating a composed layout that supports family connection, entertaining and everyday life. Carefully framed views capture the surrounding vineyards and distant hillsides, while cedar, stone and Corten steel anchor the home to its working vineyard setting and the agricultural history of the region.
As a rustic modern vineyard estate, the project balances strength and warmth through a deeply textural material palette. Inside, toasted-oak millwork, metal stair pickets and charcoal accents reflect the tones of the hillside, the vineyard and the fire-marked landscape. The result is a wine country home that honours the property’s past while creating a grounded, enduring and highly personal place for the future.
