The detail shaping high-performance buildings today

Two recent projects, Iglu student accommodation in Bondi Junction and Clifton Hill Passive House Primary School, reflect this shift. In both, window systems move beyond enclosure, contributing directly to how each building performs and is experienced.

At Iglu Bondi Junction, a multi-storey student accommodation project informed by Passivhaus principles, large glazed areas were integral to the architectural intent. Achieving this required a system capable of balancing wind loading, acoustic control, energy efficiency and accessibility within a constrained urban site.

In Melbourne, the Clifton Hill Passive House Primary School extends this approach. Designed as a vertical campus to Passive House standards, the project required a façade system capable of delivering consistent thermal performance, acoustic control and safety within an educational environment.

Here, Paarhammer Windows and Doors supplied triple-glazed composite timber-aluminium systems that manage solar gain, airflow and noise while supporting a calm internal environment. Oversized window elements bring light and views into learning spaces, reinforcing a connection between interior and landscape.

Across both projects, a consistent theme emerges. Performance is no longer achieved through singular moves, but through the resolution of multiple, often competing requirements. Airtightness must sit alongside accessibility. Durability must align with material expression. Systems must perform technically while supporting how spaces are used day to day.

In this context, window and door systems are no longer peripheral. They are instrumental in how buildings meet environmental targets, respond to site conditions and support occupant wellbeing.

As standards continue to rise, these projects point to a broader evolution. The success of a building increasingly depends on how well its details are resolved and how seamlessly systems integrate into the architectural whole.
