A technically complex hillside transformation in La Cañada Flintridge where engineered terraces, infinity water features, and integrated outdoor living spaces convert a failed slope into a multi-level residential retreat.

Hillcrest Avenue I represents one of Ecocentrix’s most ambitious hillside projects, transforming a steep and previously inaccessible slope into a fully realized multi-level outdoor environment. The design responds to both structural necessity and experiential opportunity, redefining how the site can be inhabited. It is a clear expression of the firm’s site architecture approach, where engineering, grade, and program are resolved as one system.

At the main house level, a redesigned pool scape establishes the social center of the property. Its two pools are detailed with vanishing lead edges, water spilling along two faces; the smaller of the pair was sized for efficiency, holding less water to heat through the cooler months and incorporating aswim jet. The pools, outdoor kitchen, and fire features are integrated into a cohesive terrace that supports daily living while capturing expansive canyon views.

Descending the hillside, a sequence of engineered terraces introduces increasingly immersive experiences. These include cantilevered decks, infinity-edge water features, and a floating spa accessed via a catwalk. Each element is carefully positioned to create moments of discovery while maintaining structural integrity.

Additional program elements are embedded within the slope, including a Pilates studio, seedling room, outdoor theater, and geodesic garden pods. These features expand the landscape beyond traditional outdoor living, creating a layered and experiential environment.

Planting strategies prioritize fire resilience and ecological performance, stabilizing the hillside while preserving heritage oak trees. The result is a landscape that merges technical precision with experiential richness.

“John (Feldman) is a consummate professional and incredibly talented -- not to mention an honest, upstanding human who is transparently passionate about his craft. Having worked with him on (architecture and design) industry projects, he was my go-to when it came to my personal property in Los Angeles. John visited the site and listened to my goals and wishes attentively, then took great care to integrate it all into a proposed design. We then executed, and my exterior areas and yard are now some of my favorite spots on the property... and always offering more as seasons change and the landscaping with them. I highly recommend him!”
