A landslide-recovery hillside transformation in Beverly Hills where slope stabilization, a sculptural water wall, and layered outdoor rooms convert a failed slope into a structured and highly livable garden environment.

The El Roble Drive project began as an emergency response to a significant slope failure that overtook the rear yard during the rainy season. What remained was largely unusable terrain, requiring both structural stabilization and a complete rethinking of the site’s potential. It is the kind of integrated land-and-structure problem the firm approaches as site architecture.

Terraced retaining walls were introduced to secure the hillside and establish a framework for new outdoor living spaces. These structural interventions define a sequence of environments that extend outward from the home, transforming a once hazardous condition into a functional and organized landscape.

At the center of the composition, a patterned tile water wall serves as both a visual anchor and an acoustic element. Set within a stone retaining structure, the cascading water creates a focal point that is visible from multiple vantage points, including the kitchen terrace and main lounge areas. Above, an overlook deck introduces vertical layering and a secondary perspective into the garden.

Outdoor living is organized across a series of interconnected terraces. These include a fully integrated outdoor kitchen and bar, a dining terrace shaded by preserved olive trees, a fire pit lounge, and a cold plunge nestled within planting. Each space is carefully positioned to balance openness with a sense of retreat.

The front yard was also reimagined as a softened, park-like approach, replacing a previously utilitarian entry with layered planting and sculptural paving. The result is a landscape that merges structural necessity with refined outdoor living, creating a resilient and highly adaptable hillside environment.

Professional Reviews

“John (Feldman) is a consummate professional and incredibly talented -- not to mention an honest, upstanding human who is transparently passionate about his craft. Having worked with him on (architecture and design) industry projects, he was my go-to when it came to my personal property in Los Angeles. John visited the site and listened to my goals and wishes attentively, then took great care to integrate it all into a proposed design. We then executed, and my exterior areas and yard are now some of my favorite spots on the property... and always offering more as seasons change and the landscaping with them. I highly recommend him!”
