A coastal hillside landscape in Rancho Palos Verdes where terraced gardens, sculptural retaining walls, and panoramic ocean views create a cohesive and immersive outdoor environment.

Perched along the ridgeline of Rancho Palos Verdes, the Crest Road project redefines a hillside property by organizing the terrain into a sequence of structured outdoor spaces that fully engage the coastal setting.

A system of sculptural retaining walls establishes the primary framework of the landscape, shaping terraces that accommodate dining, lounging, and gathering. These interventions transform the steep slope into a series of usable environments while maintaining a connection to the natural contours of the site. The retaining structure itself becomes the organizing armature of the garden, a clear instance of site architecture.

The relationship between architecture and landscape is enhanced through refined detailing, including the introduction of glass railings that open views outward toward the Pacific Ocean. These modifications allow the terraces to read as extensions of the home rather than separate elements.

Circulation is guided through layered pathways that move down the hillside, revealing new perspectives at each level. Fire-side seating areas and a spa zone are integrated within the terraces, creating a balance between active and passive use.

Planting reflects the coastal character of the region, utilizing drought-tolerant species arranged in layered compositions that stabilize the slope while providing seasonal variation. The result is a landscape that merges structure, environment, and view into a unified experience.

“John (Feldman) is a consummate professional and incredibly talented -- not to mention an honest, upstanding human who is transparently passionate about his craft. Having worked with him on (architecture and design) industry projects, he was my go-to when it came to my personal property in Los Angeles. John visited the site and listened to my goals and wishes attentively, then took great care to integrate it all into a proposed design. We then executed, and my exterior areas and yard are now some of my favorite spots on the property... and always offering more as seasons change and the landscaping with them. I highly recommend him!”
