Water and mountain views, empty-nester priorities, and a Mercer Island home renovated for the next chapter.

Where Water, Mountains, and the Next Chapter Meet.

Mercer Island isn't just an address — it's a set of design conditions few other Seattle neighborhoods share. Water and mountain views. Specific, ever-changing light. A tight-knit community where privacy is precious and every window placement matters. For Artala Designs, a recent Mercer Island renovation brought all three of these forces into one project — designed for clients entering a new phase of life, in a home built around the view rather than beside it.

Light and Orientation.

Mercer Island light moves fast and changes character throughout the day. Morning light off the water arrives early and low; later, mountain views to the east shift the mood of a room entirely. Getting this right isn't a matter of style — it's part of the process: asking which rooms deserve the view most, and which moments of light are worth designing an entire space around, before a single wall comes down.

A Home Right Sized for What's Next.

This project's clients were empty nesters, and the brief was never about downsizing — it was about right-sizing. A primary suite built for daily life. A guest suite that makes visiting family feel genuinely welcome. Former bedrooms reimagined as a studio and a reading room that never existed before. Getting this right meant construction fluency as much as design sensibility — knowing which walls could move, and which couldn't, before the plans were ever drawn.

Privacy and views, held in balance.

Mercer Island homes often sit close to their neighbors even as they're oriented toward a view corridor — a tension that has to be designed for, not discovered after the windows go in. Strategic glazing placement, landscaping, and screening elements let this home stay open to its views while staying private where it counts.

The Material Standard.

Luxury on Mercer Island isn't about flash — it's about specificity. Every material in this home was chosen with an eye toward longevity as well as beauty, because these clients weren't renovating for resale. They were renovating for the next twenty years. That same care extended beyond finishes: cherished mementos found their place throughout the home, and new art was sourced from local galleries like Gray Sky Gallery — pieces chosen to feel like they'd always belonged there, not like they were bought to fill a wall.

A Home in Its Element.

Nearly 30 years in, this wasn't a house that needed reinventing. It needed to catch up to the life already happening inside it. That's the real work on Mercer Island: not imposing a look onto the water, the light, and the view — but designing a home that finally feels like it belongs beside them.
