Reclaiming views of the water was the leading principle that guided the new home design. The previous layout was closed off and compartmentalized by half walls and small, punched window arrangements. By reclaiming unused balconies and reimagining the interior layout, we were able to create additional living space and maximize views from the most used areas of the home.

The minimalist kitchen acts as a functional boundary transitioning from the home’s bedrooms to its main living and dining areas. Built with handleless Bulthaup cabinets and a partial backsplash of calacatta marble, the kitchen’s sleek, geometric design redirects views towards the ocean while constructing an intuitive travel path. A lengthy row of low cabinetry and appliances visually connects the space to the living room without structural interruptions.

Bright neutral interiors mixed with abundant earth tones and playful textures emphasize the evolving color palette of the exterior landscape that is visible in nearly every location. Since the gathering area connects into one large space, the materials and furnishings are carefully selected to shape smaller, individual vignettes throughout. European white oak floors, calacatta marble, and light gray millwork set the base for the interior palette which creates harmony between coniferous terrains and contemporary furnishings.

Similar to the gathering spaces of the home, the primary bedroom frames a breathtaking ocean view. As the seasons change on the East End of Long Island, the home evolves along with it – continually connecting the couple with the ever-evolving landscape.

The primary bathroom is a spa-like retreat centered around a floating terrazzo marble tub and stand-alone shower enclosure. The custom vanity millwork follows the exterior architecture and carries a consistent material palette with the rest of the home's interiors. The shower’s terrazzo-marble tiles provide an organic texture that plays off of the rigid geometric lines that form the shower and tub.

From the bedroom hallway, the towering monolithic appearance of the terrazzo shower stall creates a sculptural gesture that almost pulls you in. The solid form creates a momentary sense of compression upon entry, which gives the primary bathroom a sense of grandeur as the natural light and specimen trees reveal themselves. Throughout the day, this contrast of solid and void creates a playful dance of shadow and light.

Repositioning the spine of the home also allowed for the kitchen, living room, and dining areas to engage in a newly situated open floor plan which naturally helps bring people together. In all of these spaces, a continuous ribbon of floor to ceiling glazing reclaimed views of the water, balancing the interior and exterior ecosystems of style and scenery.

We designed and renovated Sight Sea House with its immediate surroundings in mind at every turn. The new home fully reclaims the previously understated Montauk water views and reconnects the couple to their surroundings. Configuring the space to capture views of the ocean directed both the architecture and interior choices, carefully connecting the home and the family with the spectacular exterior setting.
