Hotels, like rock stars, need revamping as they age. This renovation of the Continental Hyatt House (aka the Riot Hyatt), the iconic Sunset Strip hangout for rock-n-roll legends, became the American debut of Hyatt Hotels’ Andaz concept. Inspired by the property’s mid-century aesthetic, the design pays homage to such LA modernists as Richard Neutra and Pierre Koenig. It includes a new glass pavilion that sits at the base of the tower and serves as an entrance to the RH Restaurant. An 11-foot-high hand-painted sculpture by the installation artist Jacob Hashimoto is integrated into the pavilion’s façade. The property also features 239 rooms, 20 suites, and a rooftop pool and event space. A custom mosaic floor inspired by the modernist works of Erwin Hauer and Roberto Burle Marx weaves through the hotel lobby, the restaurant and the exterior entry path. The hotel’s balconies—made famous by stories of Keith Richards and Keith Moon hurling televisions off them—are now encased in glass, creating suites with sweeping views of downtown LA. Times change.
