Founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O'Rorke in New York City, Messana O'Rorke is renowned for crafting spaces of sublime restraint and ethereal beauty that enhance everyday life. The firm's approach focuses on a rigorously thoughtful selection of materials orchestrated in a distilled architectural language to emphasize the metaphysical qualities of space. In their architecture and interior design, they identify and conceive the essential components and harness light, scale, and meticulous detail to evoke emotion, enhance experiences, and create a distinct and memorable sense of place. The firm's award-winning projects range from private residences, multi-family developments, retail and hospitality destinations to art galleries and installations. Every commission reflects Messana O'Rorke's uncompromising commitment to creating architecture and interiors that express a quiet luxury underpinned by a search for order, clarity and beauty. Messana O’Rorke has been recognized with many of architecture's most prestigious awards, including from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York State and New York City chapters, the Society of American Registered Architects, the Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards, Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year and The Architect’s Newspaper. Their work is regularly featured in leading publications including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Dwell, Wallpaper* and Architectural Digest. Their first monograph, “Messana O’Rorke Building Blocks,” was published by Rizzoli New York in 2022. As part of the launch, the partners gave a presentation at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In 2025, Brian was elevated to the AIA’s College of Fellows, its highest distinction.
