The newest addition to the Kimpton Hotel family – The Goodland in Santa Barbara has officially opened its doors to unveil the premiere hotel in coastal luxury. Serving as both a retreat for the fashionable urbanite and beach loving surfer alike, The Goodland takes inspiration from the elaborate tapestry that makes up California. With a highly nuanced interior and exterior design, the property invites guests to explore and engage. Tactile fabrics, hand crafted furnishing and inspirational artwork enhance the human scale of the property so that it is equal parts inviting, enticing, charming, and intoxicating.
Studio Collective intended to design the 158 guest rooms like one’s favorite t-shirt; “casual, comfortable, perfectly tailored, and without a shred of pretense.” Upgraded pool-side rooms feature private patios enclosed in warm wood fences. The interiors of the guest rooms are comprised of hand troweled warm white plaster walls and darkened wood ceiling beams that pay homage to the craftsmanship of the old Santa Barbara missions. Upgraded guest bathrooms are clad in Saltillo tile further enhancing the Santa Barbara aesthetic. Darkened metal fixtures add sophistication and contrast to the light, bright bathrooms. Studio Collective created custom furnishings designed to make the guest experience as fun as possible. Details such as, bottle opener drawer pulls, vintage record players and an eclectic mix of vinyl and reading material located in each guest room all add up to compliment the whimsical environment.
The Goodland has perfected California Cool. Driving up to the hotel, guests are immediately greeted by a lushly landscaped exterior. Picnic tables and various lounge seating create the ultimate kickback setting. Upon entering the Goodland lobby, guests are invited to capture their favorite moments in the nearby photo booth. The decadent front desk is wrapped in natural rope and sits in front of a custom wood-panel art wall. Artwork plays a large part in the design of the property as several works from both famous and up and coming artists are located throughout the grounds. A large custom hand shaped Renny Yater board bisects the ceiling above the lobby and features an intricately carved story of California Chumash history as depicted by Kevin Ancell. These vibrant pieces are offset by vintage photography and hand selected artifacts which point to California’s heritage.
Morning or night, guests are given access to the round-the-clock lobby bar, a place to enjoy a drink, be it a cappuccino or a cosmopolitan. The intimate billiard room is a natural alternative to the lobby bar and opens out to an expansive outdoor patio where guests can drink and dine alfresco. Fire pits encircled by modern Adirondack chairs allow guests to cozy up on a chilly night beneath the soft illumination of the lights hanging from the trellis above.
The Goodland’s premiere restaurant, The Outpost, provides guests with an exciting culinary experience. The Outpost uses the finest locally grown ingredients and artfully prepares them in a playfully casual atmosphere that features bench style banquette seating. An impressive four sided bar extends from the interior of the restaurant to the exterior, trellis-covered al fresco dining area, creating both a visual and physical connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. With low seating amid glowing fire pits, the outdoor lounge doubles as a romantic spot defined by the lush foliage and colorful paper lanterns.
It comes as no surprise that Studio Collective designed the pool area with Santa Barbara’s seasonal climate in mind. The rich landscaping guides guests to an active deck surrounded by daybeds intermingled with an eclectic mix of vintage-style lounge chairs and reclaimed sailcloth beanbag chairs allowing patrons to take advantage of the poolside either while enjoying a drink during the day or while catching a great local band after sundown. The Goodland—a playful escape from the daily grind a coastal home away from home.
