Under the design guide of Studio Collective, in collaboration with SWIRE Hotels, the rooftop destinations atop EAST, Miami Hotel will be crowning jewels for the Hotel, Brickell City Centre, and the greater downtown Miami area at large. The lushly landscaped, expansive outdoor lounge called SUGAR, andits more private, interior space dubbed the TEA LOUNGE, will together provide its guests a variety of indoor and outdoor social gathering spaces to lounge, entertain, romance and dream. Building on the brands signature EAST Hotel rooftop space overlooking the stunning Skyline and harbor views of Hong Kong, SUGAR Miami will carry on the notion of intrigue and voyeurism from near and far by overlooking all of Downtown Miami and its unique surrounding waterways below, all the while floating forty stories up. Whereas SUGAR will offer an approachable transition from late afternoon cocktails & sunsets to extended evening libations under the stars, complemented with savory shared bites influenced by Vietnam and Southeast Asia, the darker more interior world of TEA LOUNGE will provide a more exclusive, Chinois-inspired setting for special private events, rotating nightly parties and the ability to get lost late into the night, which is at heart the rhythm of Miami…
Moving beyond this calmer, lush lower greenspace patrons of SUGAR ascend either of two gently curved stone ramps to a large, glowing communal outdoor bar. Open on all sides, with over thirty hand-carved, rustic teak barstools, and resting below a deep wooden post & beam structure of reclaimed oak, an impressive solid reclaimed teak topped bar is set aglow from below; highlighted with warmly lit gold leafing illuminated from behind beautifully hand-carved teak screens. Commanding attention at this expansive outdoor bar, the 3-tiered central island displays a bounty of warmly up-lit spirits from both near and far, inviting guests to try an eclectic mix of infused cocktails and unique libations. Floating overhead, several rhythmic bent-wood fans gently circulate providing movement and keeping patrons cool, all adding to the spaces charm and soulful vibe. This impressive rooftop structure at over 40’ square is in essence a modern-day temple for drinking, and a wonderful social gathering space to watch day turn to night. Encompassing the bar an expansive deck of Brazilian Ipewood spans the rooftop, which is carved away again by the sinuous lines of low height, textured stone planters brimming with up-lit fauna and spilling over with Silver Palm, Bromeliad and Buttonwood. Here too mature trees provide areas of shade and cover and further frame views to the city and sea beyond.
Arriving into the TEA LOUNGE guests immediately feel they have been transported into an entirely different world; one of intrigue and mystery, where you can dance the night away with old friends and new, from Miami, New York and Hong Kong alike. This is a more exclusive environment, a much more intimate and sexy space. Derived from the traditional Tea houses of China and Japan where patrons would meet to socialize, for entertainment, and for small bites paired with special concoctions, here too the East, Miami offers up a special place for those to loosen up and unwind. Upon entrance, moving past a compressed foyer of stone slab floors, heavy granite columns guests are presented with an intricate wall of glowing artworks by Jocelyn Marsh, titled ‘Dulce Flora.’ Once inside you feel a soaring A-frame structure clad with a dark wood ceiling, a set aglow from clusters of large bell-shaped pendants suspended with thick black rope, sensuous leather strapping, complete with aged brass accents. Dominating the East side of the room is a large central bar, clad with a dark, chiseled stone bar top and supple leather armrest; further outfitted with fourteen sculpted barstools with aged brass and plum leather. Behind this floats a crystalline structure, composed of steel, wood, glass and antique mirror which delicately displays the houses best spirits, backlit with sparkling lights and flanked by two delicate, blackened bronze branch sconces with a cherry blossom motif. Framed yet again with unparalleled views of the city skyline below, and softened with layered sheers of deep gold hues. Dark and luxurious wide-plank, natural oak floors throughout lead to another nook opposite the space, which features a brilliant multi-colored graphic artwork series depicting Southeast Asian landscapes, designed and curated by Studio Collective, as inspired by the phenomenal layered artworks of Xia Xiaowan. Like a central lake, an island of lush carpet with oversized floral prints in deep cognac, burgundy and bright Jewel tones anchors low, lounge-y seating comprised of loveseats and daybeds in dark velvets. Low, comfy loungers in sumptuous cognac leathers provide respite to really sink into. Flanking this central den are more intimate seating areas with much lower, glowing metal punched ceilings, decorative banquettes of warm brown raffia and bookended with stunning bronze consoles. Finally, an expansive tactile wall of suede panels with delicate inlays of aged perforated brass add a strong sense of warmth and heaviness to this sure to be heavy, sought-after destination.
Blending several Southeast Asian influences, from regional design cues and pan-Asian cooking, along with the colorful Latin culture, music and the sultry Miami environment the rooftop destinations of SUGAR and the TEA LOUNGE look to elevate the Downtown social scene to new heights. Floating high above the city guests of the East Hotel can float back and forth between two unique worlds: enjoying casual evenings under the stars sipping perhaps a nice rose, or getting lost to exotic beats in a sultry living room, enjoying the world’s best bubbly, lounging late in the early morning hours…
