Designed by Philip Johnson in 1964 for Dallas construction magnate Henry C. Beck Jr. and his wife, Patty, the Beck House is a cultural landmark and the only single-family residence in Dallas by the legendary architect — a nearly 13,700-square-foot expression of New Formalism set on 6.45 acres along the banks of Bachman Creek, where a rhythmic arched colonnade encircles the house like a stone cloister and a double-height atrium anchored by sweeping twin staircases commands the entry sequence. When the iconic home fell into disrepair and faced the threat of demolition, a determined client became its steward, enlisting the design team to restore travertine-clad interiors, warm wood-paneled rooms, and the signature vaulted dining room while sensitively modernizing the residence for contemporary family living: an outdated staff wing reimagined as a new kitchen, informal dining, and living area; a former gym converted to a media room; and a primary suite reconfigured for openness, finished in book-matched marble and bathed in light filtered through Johnson's signature arches. Outside, landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand reconceived the grounds, rehabilitating mature trees, stabilizing the creek banks, restoring areas of native prairie grass, and introducing a shallow reflecting pool at the new family entrance — all of it leading, across the creek, to a concrete pool cabana that sits among the trees with the quiet authority of a modern pavilion, completing an estate where careful restoration and thoughtful intervention ensure that one of the most significant midcentury residences in North Texas will endure not as a relic, but as a home.

“We’ve had the good fortune to work with this talented firm on two residences over 25 years and it was such a pleasure! We’d do it again just for the fun EXCEPT we would not change a thing about the current home Mil and Svend (and awesome team) designed and furnished for us. We have enjoyed our home for 10 years and the space inspires me every day, literally! Words that come to mind when I think of Mil and Svend are: incredibly talented, highest integrity, master collaborators, flexible problem solvers, inspiring creativity, kind-hearted, respectful and trustworthy. If you have the opportunity to engage them on your project, I assure you, your life will be richer.”
