House From Five Faults

The House From Five Faults is a geological representation nestled within Carraig Ridge, an exclusive 44-home retreat spanning 660 acres of pristine foothills between Calgary and Banff. In this visionary rural development, nature itself is the true luxury, with 550 acres permanently safeguarded by conservation easements to protect the surrounding aspen groves, evergreens, and prairie grasses. Designed with a 100-year architectural vision across four distinct lot profiles—Forest, Edge, Meadow, and Cliff—the community offers an intentional escape from urban life where every home permanently preserves hundreds of acres of the Alberta Rocky Mountain landscape. Positioned on a western-facing hillside, the House From Five Faults commands panoramic views of Banff and Ghost Lake, mimicking a natural rock outcropping that has subtly fractured over time. These conceptual crevasses, gaps, and fissures meticulously organize the home's layout, splitting the structure into distinct volumes that orient toward the sunset while creating intimate pockets for indoor-outdoor movement. Across 3,600 square feet, the residence blends a luxurious modern lifestyle with the rugged Canadian terrain, featuring three bedrooms, three and a half baths, a dedicated artist's studio, and a central outdoor conversation pit anchored by a fireplace. The architectural expression is deeply informed by an abstract site analysis—a mixed-media process combining ink, dye, salt, and water with the site's physical attributes to act as a deep-geology X-ray. This artistic exploration reveals the hidden tectonic forces and subterranean layers of the hillside, grounding the conceptual framework so the final structure reads not as an imposition, but as a large-scale, continuous manifestation of the mountain’s own stone veins.
