Cottage in the Woods was designed as an empty nester retreat on a forested lot outside Portland. The house underwent a full gut renovation before the interior transformation began, with a design direction rooted in Pacific Northwest cottage meets English countryside. A Tudor sensibility runs throughout - window grids, scalloped marble fireplace mantels, and arched doorways - alongside a confident use of color. Smoky Forest green, a signature for the firm, anchors the English-style kitchen, pantry, and powder room, while Farrow & Ball's Deep Reddish Brown sets a cozy tone in the living and dining room. Original ceiling beams were salvaged during the renovation and remain a key feature overhead.
The eat-in kitchen is built for casual entertaining, centered on a large table with vintage chairs, Calacatta marble surfaces, and a custom white oak china cabinet for heirloom dishware. The primary suite includes a custom bed from the designers' own furniture line and a bathroom with a tiled wet room and Carrara marble vanity. A secondary bath takes a more playful approach with glazed clay checkerboard tiles and cabinetry painted in Benjamin Moore's Baked Cumin. The result is a home that wears its color and character confidently.
