Beacon Hill

A unique building in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston presented a rare opportunity to design a 3-bedroom, 6,000 square foot residence encompassing an entire floor. The historic building had housed printing presses for the adjacent Massachusetts State House and once served as classrooms for Suffolk College. More recently the interior of the structure was opened up in preparation for condominium development. Maintaining the open feel of the original building was important to the design as was maximizing views of the historical Boston neighborhood. The original concrete beams and columns received a skim coat of joint compound and were left exposed, acting as a guide for defining spaces. Walls were placed with careful intention to highlight the owner’s large format paintings and to create views of art at nearly every turn. A central private lobby clad in white oak battens welcomes guests to the art-filled home and separates public and private wings through symmetrical blackened steel-lined portals on either side.  The kitchen and adjacent family den, offers panoramic views of the State House and surrounding Beacon Hill neighborhood. Satin anodized Aluminum cabinet fronts enhanced by the abundant natural light give a bright, modern feel to the space. In contrast dark laminate clad millwork was used across the long interior wall of the Family Room and in the back kitchen area. Private spaces feature comfortable, modern furnishings in soft natural and grey tones. The primary bedroom has views of the rooftop terrace added to the adjacent brownstone for a rare outdoor experience in the middle of Beacon Hill. The modern residence brings new purpose to a historic space.
