How to Detail a Concealed Door

Concealed Access Door – Hidden Functionality in Feature Walls

For applications that require an access door (e.g. lift shafts, storage areas), a concealed door can be designed to provide entry without disrupting the visual continuity of the wall or ceiling. By installing a pivoting panel over the access hatch, you can maintain a seamless hidden door design.

Key Considerations for Concealed Access Doors:

• Fire safety compliance – If using a fire escape or fire access door, consult a fire engineer for regulations.
• Batten and cladding alignment – Ensure battens and cladding on the door don’t clash with those on the wall or ceiling when opening. Sculptform can provide custom detailing upon request.
• Minimalist handle options – The last batten on the edge of the door can function as a discreet handle.
• Depth allowance – The wall may need to be adjusted to accommodate the door in front of the access hatch.
• Custom batten sequencing – Adjust the size and spacing of the battens to align with the feature wall and ceiling’s texture.

Interior Pivot Door – Seamless Integration for Hidden Access

A hidden pivot door allows access between rooms or into storage spaces without disrupting the batten or cladding sequence.

Factors to Consider for Interior Pivot Doors:

• Hinge selection – Ensure the door opens inward or outward as required.
• Batten and cladding alignment – The batten and cladding sequence on the door should not interfere with adjacent wall battens and cladding. Sculptform can provide custom detailing upon request.
• Door weight and size – These determine the appropriate hinge for smooth operation.

Parliament Hinge Door – Wide Opening with a Minimalist Aesthetic

For a larger door opening range, consider using a parliament hinge. This option allows a concealed door to open 180 degrees, improving accessibility while maintaining a streamlined look.

Key Considerations:

• Batten and cladding sequencing – The battens and cladding on the door face should not clash with the wall battens when opening.
• Hinge visibility – Opt for black powder-coated hinges to match the wall aesthetic.
• Batten size adjustments – Modify batten dimensions to make hinges less visible

Bi-fold Doors – Hidden When Closed, Seamless When Open

A bi-fold door system enables feature walls and facades to incorporate hidden openings, blending seamlessly with adjacent surfaces when closed.

Key Design Considerations for Bi-fold Doors:

• Batten sequence and size – Must be carefully planned to prevent clashing when doors open and close.
• Custom detailing – Contact us for project-specific recommendations to ensure perfect alignment

Garage Door – Seamless Facade Integration

A garage door can be designed to blend effortlessly with the facade by incorporating Click-on Battens, Click-on Cladding or Tongue & Groove Cladding. By applying these materials directly to the garage door surface, you can create a cohesive architectural finish that enhances the overall building aesthetic.

Key Considerations for Garage Doors:

• Weight Distribution – A counterweight garage door is ideal. Always consult your garage door manufacturer to ensure proper weight support. The weight of your sequence can be calculated on our Price and Spec tool.
• Door type compatibility – The choice of a roller door, swing door, or sectional door affects the available design options. Consult Sculptform or your garage door provider to ensure compatibility.
• Weather resistance – Since garage doors are exposed to the elements, select durable, weather-resistant materials that maintain their finish over time.
