Drawing inspiration from Tokyo Jazz cafes or “Jazz Kissaten,”in post war Japan, the project catalyzed. This was a time where listening to the latest US jazz imports in a social setting was the norm (home stereos were not) and where the bar staff took playing music as serious as the cocktails. Kissa-Bars provided a communal gathering spot for daily commuters to unwind, and seriously appreciate music. Open throughout the day offering teas and coffee, these cozy establishments would amplify well into the evening for guests to enjoy popular jazz vinyl’s, paired with rich analog sound systems, later to be followed with exquisite Japanese spirits, all served in a comfortable setting.

Located in DTLA’s Arts district, amidst the creative fabric of fashion houses and galleries, this downtown destination has become the all-day cooperative for those sonically charged, and appreciative of refined coffees, teas and spirits, handled with care. Arriving guests eclipse the adjacent, light-filled pizzeria, passing an unmarked entrance, into the cozy womb of amber glow and perfect pitch. Soft cork laden floors, structural timbers, layered wooden rafters, and detailed rift-oak wall cladding, all add to the environments heaviness and encompassing warmth. Large, hand-crafted booths clad in sumptuous leather channels provide respite for groups, whilst a multitude of smaller seating groupings of vintage finds offer intimate places to connect.

The big reveal comes alive at the snug all-wooden bar, where thoughtful details like a recessed phone shelf and leather armrest take a back seat to one of the country’s finest assembled Hi-Fi systems on display, complete with a top-notch vinyl collection, both thoughtfully curated by LA music aficionado Zach Cowie. Time seems to slow down as featured records play, highlighted by two cleverly angled mirrors - both framing the spinning records below, hypnotizing patrons from across from the bar.
