The seaside town of Carmel is one of the most picturesque communities in the world, and the site for this pair of homes is likely the most magical plot of land on this entire stretch of coast. Here, the coastline bends dramatically outward, opening up views that span more than 180 degrees. The site is uniquely positioned between the Pescadero watershed and the central sand dunes that mark the main pathway to the beach from downtown. From this vantage point, the vistas are expansive, stretching from the southern Pacific coastline all the way north to the famed Pebble Beach Golf Course."
For our clients, the property was the perfect place to bring together their large family, including three children and a growing brood of grandchildren.
The property includes two parcels that the clients wished to develop, replacing two older homes with two new, custom-designed residences named the Beach House and the Boardwalk House.
As architects, when you are given the privilege to design on a site like this, there is an immense sense of duty to honor the place. For the Beach House, our first priority was ensuring that every single room enjoyed an unobstructed connection to the water. Setback 65 feet from the edge of the bluff and framed by two beautiful groves of Monterey Cypress, the house captures the ocean from every angle.
The home's material palette is deeply tied to the textures of the coast: natural teak siding, limestone walls that match the color of the sand dunes, and stainless-steel framing designed to handle the challenging marine environment. By following the natural contours of the land, the two-story architecture utilizes staggered volumes to maintain a gentle, low-profile scale while carving out private exterior terraces for every bedroom.
The grandeur of the great room matches the impact of the vast horizon. Walls of glass and steel mirror one another from front to back; when both are thrown open, the boundary between inside and outside disappears, and the sound of the ocean fills the entire home. It is a house designed for gathering, where numerous oceanfront terraces and warm fire pits allow the family to use and enjoy the property and its landscape all year round.
