Asked to design a house for an extended family on a temperate plateau in Saudi Arabia, our design makes use of a the passive design strategy of a light shelf on the primary, southern facade. The shelf allows winter sunlight into the living spaces behind a covered summer terrace. The resulting form creates a private outdoor garden on the upper floor for bedrooms, respecting the culture's distinct needs for privacy in a home.
