A coordinated balustrade and screening solution for multi-residential living

Located in Takapuna, Loxley Apartments is a boutique development comprising two five-storey buildings and 53 freehold residences. Designed for modern apartment living, the project includes shared amenities such as a rooftop balcony and BBQ area, along with multiple circulation zones requiring compliant balustrade and screening systems.

More than 500 lineal metres of aluminium balustrade and screening systems from UNEX Systems were supplied and installed across the development. The scope covered a wide range of applications, including internal stair balustrades, aluminium fin-style balustrades to decks and patios, frameless glass balustrades to rooftop areas, bridge and walkway balustrades, and heavy-duty car park barriers ranging from 1280mm to 1830mm in height.

Additional elements included 3m-high vertical louvre screens between decks, as well as gates, handrails, and fencing - requiring multiple system types and coordinated detailing throughout.

Early engagement with the design team ensured all systems met relevant New Zealand Building Code requirements. The project incorporated a range of loading conditions, including C3 loading for fall-risk areas such as stairs and rooftops, and F loading for high-impact car park zones. Multiple Producer Statements (PS1s) were supplied to support compliance across the different applications.

All systems were fabricated and installed by JK Glass & Aluminium, an authorised UNEX fabricator. Given the scale and repetition across the two buildings, consistency in detailing, and installation was critical to maintaining quality and programme efficiency.

The Loxley Apartments demonstrates the value of a coordinated, system-based approach to balustrade and screening design. By combining engineered UNEX systems with experienced fabrication and installation, the project achieved a consistent, compliant, and robust outcome across all areas.
