For a cycling enthusiast with a demanding professional life, Sonoma Farmhaus creates a counterpoint to speed: a place structured around solitude, guests, meals, rides, and the slower pace of the land. The site in Graton, California was chosen for its proximity to town and its access to the larger Sonoma County cycling landscape, with existing beech, oak, and fruit trees preserved for shade, privacy, and continuity. The house is organized as two simple forms: a Main House and a Guest House with Bike Barn, joined by a central outdoor dining terrace anchored by a fireplace. Arrival does not begin with a conventional front door. It starts at an unlocked entry gate, then moves through the site toward the shared terrace and the house beyond. That sequence makes the outdoor room the center of the project, turning arrival, dining, gathering, and retreat into part of the same daily ritual.
The material language is restrained, durable, and built to weather. Rammed earth blocks, fabricated from soils excavated on site, form the gable end walls of both structures. Standing seam metal roofing, board and batten siding, steel doors, reclaimed redwood, walnut, and locally sourced tile give the house a quiet working character. Inside, the primary bedroom is separated from the living space by a double-sided fireplace set within a custom steel and walnut wardrobe, while the primary bath opens directly to the exterior and outdoor shower. The project is not a second home in the usual sense. It is a calibrated retreat, social when it needs to be and deeply quiet when it does not.
