ABOUT

Located on a corner site off Bell Street, this project involves 4 terraces in 3 storey format. The project is carried out for an established developer consortium with a predominant residential project portfolio.

The site is in a desirable location in close proximity to the CBD, public transport and convenient access to commercial and institutional amenities. Bell Street location with diverse building typologies and uses in the vicinity, warranted a non-conventional approach to residential design.

DESIGN

The design typology developed for this terrace is a modern take on small footprint terrace style housing that has a strong presence in Melbourne. The built form and materials take cues from the robust and semi-industrial image of the location that the project site is situated in. The building engages with the street and corner location through terraces, window positioning and feature design elements. Internally the living spaces are positioned to capture the highest possible day-light and cross-flow ventilation whilst being shielded from street noise and a high level of movement along Bell Street.

The living and kitchen spaces spill out onto the terraces which allow for visual extension of the areas, still keeping them cosy. The upper-level floor plate partially covers and frames the terraces below, allowing more use of these outdoor spaces and at the same time shading the living spaces below from the summer afternoon sun. Windows are proportioned and positioned to create a balanced facade composition whilst protecting the internal amenity of the dwellings in this location with a close-knit builtscape.

The design for these terraces offers peaceful refuge within the hustle-bustle of a busy surrounding. This unusual product typology has a unique response to its location.
