Few hotels are as directly tied to their setting as Inn at the Market, where Pike Place Market supplies its own texture, sound, pace, and local identity. SkB’s built work leaned into that specificity rather than smoothing it away. The design treats the hotel’s irregularity and character as part of its value, drawing from the Market’s color, craft, food culture, waterfront setting, and year-round atmosphere.
The refresh was conceived around a dual personality: light, crisp, and open in the warmer months, then moodier and more retreat-like in winter. Guest rooms, corridors, and public-facing hotel spaces use a palette shaped by the Market, the Sound, the mountains, and Seattle’s shifting daylight. The design does not compete with Pike Place. It creates a calmer interior counterpoint that still feels tied to the activity just outside.
Across the guest experience, the work balances the energy of the Market with the need for pause. Layered lighting, textured wall treatments, art, relaxed furnishings, and a more composed arrival sequence give the hotel a stronger sense of place without turning it into a themed version of Seattle. The project matters because it strengthens what was already valuable: a boutique hotel embedded in one of the city’s most recognizable public environments, made more comfortable, more specific, and more connected to its address.
