Tucked behind a historic residence in Charlottesville’s Martha Jefferson neighborhood, this compact studio negotiates deference and independence through form, materiality, and performance. A low-slope monopitch roof—calibrated for optimal solar gain—organizes the massing while supporting a net-positive photovoltaic array. The ground level accommodates a flexible workshop and office; above, an open-plan apartment captures distant views through expansive glazing. Subtle volumetric offsets and a continuous horizontal datum reduce perceived scale, reinforcing the structure’s subordinate presence. Crafted from durable, earthy materials the project demonstrates how an auxiliary building can integrate performance, family life, and environmental responsibility within a historic context.
