Macfie Architecture is an Auckland practice established in 2006, specialising in heritage villa and bungalow renovations, character home extensions, and contemporary new-builds. We are double ADNZ Resene Design Award winners, 2025 - New Home Award and Home Interiors Award - and previous winners in 2020 and 2019. Led by Michael and Rebecca Macfie, we offer a full architectural service across projects of every scale - from bathroom consents to full heritage restorations. We are specialists in Auckland's heritage overlay zones, working with villas and bungalows to create homes that honour their character while meeting the demands of contemporary living. From small renovations to substantial new-builds, we believe inspiring architecture should be accessible to all - whatever the scale or budget. "We love hearing about new projects, big or small. Book a complimentary introductory meeting and let's start talking about what's possible." - Michael Macfie

Who we are

About Macfie Architecture

Macfie Architecture is a family residential architecture practice in Auckland, NZ, listed among the city's architects and architectural designers and known for its villas and bungalows. Since 2006, the practice has renovated hundreds of homes of every era, from bathrooms to full character extensions, and designed new ones from the mountains to the coast of Aotearoa. It was a double winner at the 2025 Architectural Designers New Zealand Resene Design Awards.

What does Macfie Architecture do?

We design renovations, extensions and new homes, taking each project from the first site visit and concept design through to resource and building consent, with support during construction whenever it's needed. Most of our work is with Auckland's heritage villas and bungalows, adding the space, light and connection to the garden that modern family life asks of them. We also design bathrooms and ensuites, character home extensions and contemporary new builds. Read more

Where is Macfie Architecture based?

We're based in Auckland and work right across the city, from heritage villas in Ponsonby and Grey Lynn to bungalows and new builds in every corner of Auckland. Beyond the city, we design homes from the mountains to the coast of Aotearoa, with projects in Wanaka and Central Otago since 2012 and as far north as Russell. Addresses, phone numbers and enquiry details are on our contact page.

What projects has Macfie Architecture completed?

We've completed hundreds of projects since 2006, from small bathroom renovations to the grand villa projects featured here, including the award-winning Devonport Villa and Grey Lynn Villa, bungalows like Grey Lynn Bungalow and new builds like Northcote Point House. Explore all 37 projects in our portfolio.

Can you help before I buy a villa or bungalow?

Yes. We offer pre-purchase assessments, usually viewing one to three properties with you before you commit. We'll talk through what each house could become, what it's likely to need, and whether its character overlay or site will shape what's possible. Many of our renovation clients first met us this way.

Do you take on bathroom and ensuite projects?

Yes, and we love them. Bathrooms and ensuites are some of our most rewarding projects: smaller in scale, quicker to complete, and a chance to bring real design thinking to the rooms you use every day. In a villa or bungalow, they're often where old and new meet most closely.

Do you renovate non-heritage homes?

Yes. While villas and bungalows are what we're best known for, we renovate homes of every era, from state houses and mid-century homes to 1970s builds and townhouses. Whatever its age, we look for what's worth keeping in a house and design around it, so the result feels like it belongs.
