hughesumbanhowar Architects (huum) is the creative union of Scott Hughes and John Umbanhowar, whose trajectories intersected while students at SCI-Arc in the mid-nineties.

A full-service architectural firm with roots in South Florida and Southern California for over 25 years, huum responds to each project with extensive research in related architectural fields, material, craft, and environment for unique solutions as varied as the individuals or groups for whom the design is created.

Design Values

We believe the act of creating architecture is equally important to the final product. Our work process and team organization emphasizes a “hands on” approach, with the added benefit to the client of the personal and direct involvement of the Principal-in-Charge regularly throughout all phases of the project--including both design and project management.

Through ongoing dialogue the architectural and client team explore a broad array of planning and building alternatives. This array spans a spectrum from “blue sky” versions, which assume optimal opportunities, to alternative strategies, which may be more immediately implementable.
