Marrying business and leisure in one vibrant precinct
Located on a prime corner site in Christchurch’s city centre, the Sudima Hotel and Commercial Development comprises two distinct buildings linked by a covered, light-filled atrium. The five-star Sudima Hotel provides 86 luxury rooms in the heart of the city, with restaurants, a day spa, and café on the ground floor. The commercial building, with its sculptural façade, faces the busy intersection and features three levels of office space with retail offerings at the entry level.

The project team used the best materials and design solutions to create a high-spec building that not only reflects the unique Christchurch landscape, but will stand the test of time.

In a city that lost so much of its architectural heritage after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, it was important that Christchurch’s unique character was not forgotten amid the city’s rebuild. Locals sent a clear message that they did not want bland, boxed buildings or concrete monoliths. In response, our design stimulates the imagination by adding a sculptural element to the urban fabric, contributing to Christchurch’s strong sense of place.
The office building’s curvilinear glass façade sweeps across the corner site, providing an attractive interface with the streetscape. At night, the building’s illuminated exterior acts as a prominent visual marker on the northern approach to the CBD.
The hotel’s interior is designed to be ‘authentically Kiwi’. The common areas and guestrooms were inspired by the local environment; neutral, earthy colours and natural textures were chosen to capture the enduring Canterbury landscape. Where possible, locally sourced and sustainable materials were used to support Christchurch businesses and reduce the carbon footprint of the materials.
Artwork and motifs by local artist Aroha Gossage depict scenes from New Zealand landscapes with provincial flora and fauna, while the colours reflect the Canterbury Plains. Supporting a young, local artist was important to both the Sudima Hotel brand and the community.
