Richard Kerr Architecture has reimagined Soudan House with a refined two-storey extension that complements the original Victorian residence while addressing sustainability, comfort and architectural integrity. Designed for Kerr’s cousin and her family, the project demonstrates a restrained and considered approach to heritage adaptation.

A clear northern orientation on both levels maximises solar access and natural ventilation, while a layered east elevation preserves the original eaves and reduces the addition’s visibility from the street. The built form avoids overshadowing the heritage structure, with pitched roofs and a modest footprint that allow the chimneys and ridgeline to remain prominent.

To address strong western exposure, Kerr selected Warema external venetian blinds from Shade Factor. Positioned externally, these adjustable blinds reduce heat gain, eliminate the need for internal furnishings and retract for easy cleaning. Paired with a 5kW solar array, the sun shading strategy supports the home’s overall energy efficiency while maintaining a clean architectural expression.
