The new East Campus for McKinnon Secondary College is a new building/campus which provides a series of spaces that enriches the activities within them and supports the varied learning settings demanded by the College’s curricula.

The site for the new campus/building borders the long linear Virginia Park which divides the former industrial zone from the 1940/50s residential zone to the south. This site is a small, 1.2-hectare component in the southeast corner of a major 24-hectare urban renewal project – the East Village Development. The very nature of the activities as a new school within this large redevelopment is beginning to act as a catalyst for future growth within this precinct.

The design proposal for this new building ‘mapped’ the existing warehouse/factory set-outs that are currently in the precinct over the proposed school site. Through the design processes, this ‘mapping’ has been developed as a contextual device to order the layout within the school site.
