Laroona.

Tucked behind the main house and in full view of the garden, the new extension to Laroona brings warmth, light and connection back to a Federation Arts and Crafts home first built in 1914. Over time, a series of renovations had left the heritage‑listed property fragmented, with dark corners and disconnected spaces. Returning clients came to us seeking a home that supported their lifestyle and re‑established a sense of flow between the original cottage and the garden.

Our vision for Laroona was to create a modest, finely detailed extension that complements the heritage character while making the most of Tasmania’s unique light. The new sunroom is lined in Tasmanian oak, offering a warm, glare‑free space for the clients to bask in throughout the day. Taking cues from the existing pitched roof, skylights and carefully placed windows reconnect the interior, allowing light to pour into previously dim areas and strengthening the relationship between old and new.

Timber framing plays a dual role: it references the original back door and window — now reinstated as a working entry — and aligns with the horizontal lines of the corbelled brickwork, creating a subtle architectural dialogue between eras.

Alongside the extension, a series of strategic modifications were made throughout the home. The kitchen was relocated to join the sunroom and dining room, improving circulation and everyday functionality. On the ground floor, the bathroom, toilet and laundry were opened up and lifted to bring in more air and light. Upstairs, the former wardrobe was transformed back into a bathroom, with new storage added around the perimeter of the master bedroom.

Laroona is now a light‑filled, well‑connected home — a thoughtful blending of heritage character and contemporary living. The project restores the home’s relationship with the garden, enriches daily rituals and demonstrates how restrained, site‑responsive design can elevate a historic property without sacrificing its original charm.
