With the introduction of direct flight to and from Auckland, Invercargill Airport was classified as a security-designated airport - meaning, travellers heading to/from Auckland needed their luggage checked via the baggage-screening area.

The terminal expansion provided room to do just that: there is now a waiting lounge, an additional security lane with x-ray machines and an additional baggage-screening area at check-in. The upgrade required a range of jobs such as electrical, fibre, geotechnical engineering, design and fabrication.

The development was completed on time and on budget.
