Freight, located between railway lines and the Platte River, is at the center of the TAXI development in Denver’s River North arts district. The development includes new and renovated structures that look to create a new workplace that uses architecture to foster interaction and create a culture of innovation.
The transformation of a derelict, mid twentieth century freight terminal preserves the building carcass, with its deep overhangs and loading bay openings, and inserts new elements to contrast old. Flexible tenant space and common social spaces lure new economy businesses to a formerly abandoned industrial zone. A ghosting of the former truck dock pattern extends as adjacent landscape pattern.
Original paint and markings are left intact, and new glass overhead doors open offices to the landscape. An internal sky-lit corridor and sculptural plywood ribbon wall punctuated with luminous entries provides internal circulation. The main entrances slice through the building, axially connecting the entry experience to the larger site and the urban skyline beyond.
