The AMP Building has been part of Wellington’s city centre for nearly 100 years.

S&T is proud to have been involved in a series of projects with this registered heritage building, from renewal of the Sydney sandstone facade around 20 years ago, to installation of a new contemporary glazed wind lobby and accessible lift provisions, to more recent seismic upgrade investigations.

We’ve helped uncover the building’s original coffered and vaulted ceilings and polished terrazzo staircases. We’ve also been able to uncover - and once again celebrate - many more heritage elements, including decorative marble friezes, beautiful original floors and oak panelled doors. We’ve also increased the lettable floor area by carefully hanging a mezzanine floor into parts of the double-height ground floor.

A vast glass screen has replaced an unsympathetic 1980s addition halfway up the entrance stairs, which now provides visitors with an uninterrupted view of the heritage entrance interior while enhancing security requirements.

The entrance now appears to be one entity and is a simple combination of the heritage and the contemporary, allowing passersby to fully appreciate this glorious space.

In 2006, The AMP Building’s entry was the overall winner of the Metro Glass Awards.
