Engineers are a critical part of many construction projects, from residential homes to large-scale commercial developments. There are many areas of speciality that engineering consultants may have expertise in covering everything from structural, acoustic, seismic, fire, civil and geotechnical engineering.
Engineers may be critical from the very early stages of a build, including site selection and assessment when a geotechnical engineer may be needed to compile a report about the suitability of the land for building.
As a project moves on, a variety of engineering professionals may become involved and will generally work closely with the architect or builder to collaborate on design aims. For example, a seismic engineer may devise solutions to ensure structural stability and performance in the event of an earthquake.
An acoustic engineer will work to ensure the interior of a building performs as required - generally in larger-scale projects such as auditoriums, or commercial or industrial spaces.

What does a civil engineer do?
A civil engineer is an expert within a broad area of engineering that covers the design and construction of structures and infrastructure. This area of engineering includes structural engineering and geotechnical engineering.
In situations where land is being developed for multi-unit residential development or a commercial or industrial structure, engineers will generally always be involved in the process. In smaller-scale residential settings, engineers may be involved depending on the nature of the site, any special requirements or regulations, or the style and scope of the build.
