In-slab hydronic underfloor heating is a highly efficient, straightforward option when warming your home. In-slab heating is very popular in modern homes as an alternative to older, more costly, and less efficient heating systems. In-slab heating can be provided for polished concrete floors and other modern types of flooring.

The hydronic system runs throughout the entire house across both levels, with the heat source discreetly housed in a dedicated plant room by the garage.

By installing the system in-slab, the thermal mass of the concrete retains heat efficiently, creating a warmth that is both consistent and long-lasting. Multiple heating zones give the home’s occupants precise control over comfort throughout.

The Charlotte Park project was designed and built by Cadence and Co. in 2019, a two-year renovation that transformed an existing brick property into a stunning chalet-inspired family home. As with all of our projects, Comfort Heat worked closely with the architect and builder from the outset, developing a custom design that supported both the client’s lifestyle needs and the broader design vision.

One of the standout spaces is the great room, one of the largest rooms Comfort Heat has heated with hydronic to date. Timber laid over the concrete slab adds an earthy, grounded aesthetic that speaks directly to the chalet character the architect was aiming to achieve.

Scope of use

APPLICATIONS

  • Hydronic in-slab heating is suitable for large areas (50 m2 +) where the slab is used as heat storage [Thermal mass]. In-slab heating can retain heat for up to 24 hours, which means it could be heated during the day using solar, and the retained heat can be enjoyed overnight.

  • PIPE TECHNOLOGY
  • REHAU PEX pipe is specifically used for underfloor heating. It is a cross-linked polyethylene pipe with an oxygen barrier to prevent corrosion.
  • HEAT OUTPUT
  • With in-slab hydronic heating, we aim for a heat output of 100-120 W/m². A combination of flow and temperature is balanced to suit the heat load requirement of each room.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The hydronic floor heating pipe can be installed across expansion joints with the correct installation method. The minimum concrete coverage over the pipe is 30mm – this means a distance of 50mm from the top of the top mesh to the finished surface of the slab. Less will mean different more costly installation options. The minimum coverage is to ensure the structural integrity of the finished slab. Comfort Heat must be informed of any expansion joints in the slab.

Installation

The hydronic floor heating pipe is installed before the slab is poured. The pipe is attached to either the mesh or the reinforcing rods with 200mm centres (one direction only). With slabs poured directly onto the earth, it is advised to insulate under the slab to avoid heat loss into the ground. All pipework connects back to a central manifold and onto the nominated heat source.
