18th Century French Decorative Dessus-de-Porte Painting

Baran de Bordeaux

A charming 18th century dessus-de-porte oil-on-canvas in original distressed condition. These were painted to hang over doors in panelled rooms. Central to the work is a large bouquet of flowers, to the right is a cupid setting a bird free from its cage. The subject is typical of romantic sentiment of the mid-1700s in France. The piece is uniformly worn to a lovely, soft patina.
