A high-performance timber flooring solution is redefining expectations for commercial and residential spaces, combining the natural beauty of timber with advanced durability; the perfect solution for this new venue.

Head north of Wellington, to see joyful guests glide smoothly across the timber floors of the new Tatum Pavilion, unaware of the European engineering beneath each step. Located in the historic Tatum Park, this new wedding and function venue hosts multiple events each week, from lively receptions to intimate gatherings, yet its floors remain a stunning feature, mirroring the warm timber of the cathedral-like ceilings above. Composed of 425 square metres of European Hardened Timber, it’s designed to marry the warmth of real wood with sought-after commercial-grade resilience.

A new addition to the redeveloped events venue undertaken by Wayne Bishop Group, the pavilion's design challenge was clear: preserve the site's historic charm while delivering a surface capable of withstanding high foot traffic, spills, and, let’s be honest, the occasional dropped glass. Laminates would compromise underfoot comfort and traditional timber would require regular sanding, yet Bjelin’s Hardened Timber, distributed by Belgotex New Zealand, offered a long term solution. One that, nearly two years on, ensures the floors still shine, with little hint of the countless events it’s hosted.

The technology behind the beauty

What is European Hardened Timber? Richard Crosby, Hard Flooring Category Manager at Belgotex, explains, “It starts with a real wood top layer, enhanced through advanced UV-cured lacquer technology. By utilising less timber in terms of a top layer, we gain performance.”

Cleverly embedded within the coating, the wood resists scratches, impacts, and everyday wear which would quickly age traditional timber. Beneath, an ultra high density fibre core provides stability, water resistance, and impact protection, allowing longer, wider panels to float on underlay and secured across a space without adhesive.

“Achieving higher performance isn’t down to one key advancement but by enhancing all materials to work more together as a collective,” adds Richard. From coated bevels to precision locking systems, every element is designed to protect against moisture ingress and mechanical stress.

Design flexibility meets sustainability and performance

Tatum Pavilion's Bjelin L in Natural, Nature was chosen for its natural warmth and character. Belgotex’s offering of the Bjelin range spans multiple sizes and finishes, including a variety of grading options. Efficiency in production by slicing rather than sawing timber reduces waste while increasing the availability of clean, prime-grade boards. The icing on this ‘sustainable cake’ is Certifications like FSC and Greenguard, guaranteeing responsibly sourced timber with low emissions.

For architects specifying timber in high-traffic spaces, European hardened timber offers peace of mind by achieving a class 33 rating under EN 14354 and ISO 10874 standards, and offering a comforting 35-year residential warranty.

As for installation, floating or glue-down installations are both feasible according to Richard, giving desirable flexibility to match project demands and tight timelines. At Tatum Pavilion, the proof is underfoot. The floor withstands dozens of weekly events, each leaving no compromise to aesthetics, and minimising maintenance interruptions.

“Having European hardened timber means we can offer clients the best of both worlds: beauty and resilience. It’s no wonder leading timber manufacturers and New Zealand specifiers are trending towards this timber category moving forward.”

Beyond performance, the flooring contributes to the overall sensory experience of the space, reducing impact noise and enhancing acoustics during busy events. Its consistent finish ensures visual continuity, even under heavy use, supporting the pavilion’s premium aesthetic.

Importantly, reduced maintenance requirements translate to lower lifecycle costs, making it a practical investment for commercial operators. As sustainability becomes increasingly critical, materials balancing durability with responsible sourcing are gaining traction. European Hardened Timber demonstrates how innovation can elevate a beloved traditional material, ensuring it remains relevant in modern architectural design, while meeting the rigorous expectations of designers and end users.
