Huge self build eco-home is in need of heating after a lengthy renovation. Read how Herschel was chosen for ease of fitting, comfort, aesthetic, and cost.

Background

Herschel infrared heating was selected as the optimal solution for a high-performance, Scandi-inspired self-build designed to achieve near-passive house efficiency. The project prioritized sustainability, simplicity, and integration with renewable energy. The build required an electric heating system that could work seamlessly with a 4kW solar PV array and minimize reliance on the grid. Herschel’s low-wattage, high-efficiency panels provided the ideal match.

Challenge

Traditional heating systems like air or ground source heat pumps were considered but ruled out due to high installation costs and complexity. Herschel’s system cost less than 25% of the heat pump quote. The well-insulated, thermally efficient build demanded a solution that avoided energy waste, offered precise zoning, and delivered comfort without noise or drafts. Rapid, non-invasive installation was also critical to meet the self-build timeline.

Herschel’s Solution

Herschel Comfort panels were installed throughout living areas, delivering efficient, radiant heat that warms people and surfaces directly like sunlight, ensuring comfort at lower air temperatures (16–18°C). The slim, frameless design blends into the minimalist interior, preserving wall and floor space. In bathrooms, Herschel Select XLS Mirror panels provide dual functionality: powerful heating and a steam-free mirror, enhancing usability and hygiene.

The entire system was wired during the second fix and installed in just two and a half days, with no pipework, boilers, or underfloor disruption. Room-by-room control is managed via MD2 thermostats, enabling smart scheduling, remote access, and full zoning—maximizing efficiency and user comfort.

We are half way through our first winter and the panels are exceeding expectation. The house is warm and comfortable without knowing where or how it is being heated. The internet control and monitoring is fantastic, allowing us to pre-heat the house before anyone arrives.

Sustainability & Performance

The total heating load is under 6kW, enabling 100% renewable, CO₂-free heating when paired with solar. Herschel panels are 97% recyclable, made in the UK, and carry a 10-year warranty with zero maintenance. Their compatibility with solar and smart controls makes them a future-ready solution for eco-conscious builds.

I absolutely would choose this system again. I mean, for ease of fitting, for the comfort, for the aesthetic, for the cost. I felt incredibly supported through the process. It was one of the least stressful processes of the whole build, dealing with Herschel was just a pleasure from start to finish.
